Waterloo Region – November 27, 2012 – Waterloo Region students from Grades 11 and 12 are participating tomorrow in a ZOOM Career Day focused on helping them hone their interest in a career path after high school. The event, being held at the Delta Hotel in downtown Kitchener, is the 3rd annual Business and Entrepreneurship ZOOM Career Day sponsored by the Business & Education Partnership of Waterloo Region (BEP).
“This event is especially focused on students who are enrolled in the Specialist High Skill Major program,” said Karen Klink, BEP executive director. “Students will have the opportunity to hear from industry professionals, participate in ‘hands-on’ workshops, view interactive displays and network with other students which is a great experience for everyone attending.”
The BEP leads the way in career exploration for youth in Waterloo Region, connecting students, educators and employers to promote student success and community prosperity. The programs bridge the gap between school and work to help students explore careers, gain meaningful professional connections, and learn valuable job skills.
Students attending tomorrow’s event will have the opportunity to hear from keynote Popy Dimoulas-Graham, founder of Charity Republic, who has been volunteering since she was 12 years old. Charity Republic is a Canadian-based organization that launched in December, 2010 with the mission of connecting people who strive to make a positive impact on the world through volunteerism. Charity Republic aims to help volunteers reflect on their experiences with a charity or non-profit and to help potential volunteers find the most rewarding opportunities possible.
Other breakout sessions will include, ‘Building a Summer Company’ from the Waterloo Small Business Centre; ‘Co-ops Work: Co-operatives, The Best Kept Secret in Business’, from the Ontario Co-Op Association; ‘Marketing from an Entrepreneur’ with Ryan Burgio of Stryve Group; ‘The Game of Sales’ with Christine Tutssel of Axonify; ‘Show Me the Money’ from Libro Financial Group; and ‘Start-Up Speed Dating’ featuring local startup companies from Waterloo Region.
This year BEP was granted financial support from Libro Financial Group through the Community Builder Grant Program. This program supports projects that give youth in southwestern Ontario the opportunity to develop leadership and career skills through participation in community development projects.
