Argo, built just west of Kitchener-Waterloo in New Hamburg, Ont., has spent the better part of 50 years earning a global reputation as the vehicle that can drive anywhere and survive almost any punishment.
Its parent company, Ontario Drive & Gear Ltd. (ODG), has built its business selling to organizations in sectors where the need to get through rough terrain is crucial: oil and gas, mining and utilities, as well as special forces like the South African paratroopers. It also sells to academic researchers: the low tire pressure of an Argo means a low environmental footprint.
This week, ODG released the Argo LX, its first luxury model designed for consumers and comfort. We Built This caught up with the company to find out how its employees are making vehicles that can drive anywhere – even on the moon, as is planned for 2020.
