WATERLOO, ON, December 15, 2020 — Spot It, a Waterloo Region-based retail technology company specializing in mapping solutions for the industry, has announced the launch of new features in the latest version of its app, introducing dedicated user accounts and a recipe/project tool that consists of three categories: recipes, home projects and checklists. With this exciting app update, the company is helping to drive critical items needed to local food banks across Ontario.
Launched in May 2020, Spot It founders saw an opportunity to adapt their existing technology and reach shoppers directly to provide them with a more efficient and safer way to shop in direct response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, the retail technology company is focusing its efforts on supporting local community needs while continuing to offer a resource for Canadians to more efficiently and safely complete their holiday shopping amidst the pandemic.
“From day one, we have approached the development of the Spot It platform with an empathetic mindset and the sole motivation to help our communities,” said Caleb Opersko, founder and CEO of Spot It. “These new app features were conceived as a way to minimize the need for high risk individuals to have to engage in in-store retail shopping trips. The capacity of our app’s pre-determined lists feature has provided unique opportunities to directly help our communities — and we are thrilled to be able to support local food banks this holiday season in our efforts.”
“We are so grateful for companies such as Spot It who recognize the critical need for donations to ensure no one goes hungry in Waterloo Region,” said Wendi Campbell, CEO, The Food Bank of Waterloo Region. “The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed that food banks are an essential service. Food insecurity is a growing concern as more people struggle to put food on their table, and the support is needed now more than ever.”
Spot It’s new recipe/project tool allows users to generate and upload their favourite recipes and home projects, while supporting the creation of shopping lists for ingredients and materials needed and providing detailed maps in which to find them at the appropriate retail store. The tool also has a checklist feature, which auto-populates a map of items needed for specific initiatives or occasions, such as a local food bank accepting donations for the holidays or back to school necessities.
The addition of dedicated user accounts will allow Spot It users to further optimize their shopping trips and capitalize on the platform’s new recipe/project tool. The platform’s accounts support a user-to-user sharing framework, allowing users to share shopping lists, checklists, recipes and home projects with one another. Additional features include a geo-locator, secure login capabilities and a mobile-first, desktop friendly approach.
Account holders have the ability to make their content private or public on the app, allowing public lists to be explored in a new “Discover” interface of the platform. To encourage engagement, users can like one another’s content.
Currently displaying store maps of over 100 stores across Ontario, with 500+ searchable items within each map, the Spot It platform is accessible to users through its website and new mobile app. The newest and latest updated version of the Spot It app which includes its new features is now available for download in the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
