"The Bridging Entrepreneurs to Students (BETS) program is a co-op program established to support seed and early stage startup companies who would not otherwise have the financial resources to hire full-time staff or co-ops, by pairing them with University of Waterloo co-op students.
The Conrad Centre mentors and supports the co-op students (who are all first year engineering students) throughout the term by helping them develop transferable employment skills through micro work term placements and a series of workshops and seminars.
BETS details for employers
The process
- All companies must complete an application in which you will be asked about the type of work you will need students to complete.
- Applications will be reviewed by the BETS Coordinator, along with the faculty and staff of the Conrad Centre.
- A maximum of 10 companies will be selected for each five week term. The process is competitive, and we are looking to for placements that will provide students with the greatest learning experience.
- All partner candidates will be notified two weeks prior to the start of the first project placement of a successful application.
Costs to partner companies
- Companies are asked to pay a minimal cost of $600 per team for five weeks.
- Insurance – The University of Waterloo requires companies hiring co-op students to carry liability insurance. If you do not currently carry liability insurance, we can offset the cost of obtaining this insurance by reducing your payment cost. We would also be happy to help you with any associated paperwork.
General guidelines for project scope
- Project/Work scope is five weeks.
- A standard work week is recognized as 40 hours including breaks. Students will work within the standard work hours.
